Saturday was another beautiful day of weather. We headed to the V&A waterfront for a little shopping and culture. I bought a new razor (sorry Jude) and some earplugs (sorry roommates). We walked outside to where I think the Global Challenge might have berthed and got a lovely soft Mr Whippy style icecream complete with flake but in a sugar cone.
We left all too soon and drove up to signal hill. This was particularly awesome as I went in a truck with a few people standing in the back as we wound up the hill. The view from the top was simply spectacular. Would definitely head up again - I’m particularly keen to hike up table mountain some day.
We headed back to the base and I read for an hour or so until dinner at which point I was called outside and got involved in the ongoing hot water tank crisis. Hot water was pouring from the top of one of the two immersion tanks. With much commotion we finally stopped the pouring by turning off the mains pressure inlet to the hot water tanks. This has rather unfortunately had the side effect of leaving us without hot water. The leak was also in the laundry and wasn’t discovered for some time. When Sumona did find it, a lot of bedding was already soaking and a lot more was damp. Tonight I think it is beginning to be under control again.
This morning we went to Valley Community Church (VCC) just down the road in Fish Hoek. It was a little weird (wasn’t a normal sermon or anything) this morning but the worship was very good. Will definitely try it again another week. It’s a little early though (9am) and it’s a half hour walk.
For lunch the DTS from Muizenberg joined us for a braai (pronounced bri as in bright) - more Britishly known as a barbecue. There are about 20 of us and about 20 of them. It was good to socialize together although I think it had only been a day since I’d mastered all the names of the guys from this base so it was chaos in the names department again. A few Brits were there which was reassuring and good.
I’ve just completed my journal which I need to hand in tomorrow morning. I’m also on breakfast duty this week and get to put the flags up. What else? Oh - I braved Skype and called my parents using Skype-out. Cost all of 32p for a 25 minute conversation with them. Seems pretty cheap to me. Oh and I cricked my neck by sleeping awkwardly last night - Sumona says that she will get me an extra pillow once the laundry is all dry again.
Tomorrow we are hearing from Ken who flew in from the states yesterday. I believe he is talking about identity in Christ. Will let you know how interesting it is later in the week.
Just a quick note to say that I may not blog every single day - I’m gradually getting less time everyday (tomorrow for example is laundry day).
Try Fullies a few times while you’re there if you can. (Fish Hoek Full Gospel I think is what it’s called). It’s on the same road as VCC. A white building, on the right, a few blocks before VCC. That was my home church while I was there.
