balcony

I’m sitting typing this on the balcony of Media Village.  I’m on the second floor of what used to be a guest house or hotel of some sort.

I can see houses around me illuminated by the street lamps; shimmering lights to the left (Muizenberg) and to the right (Simon’s Town) where I can see the shadow of the mountains rising up away from the town; a full moon rising in the sky alongside countless stars of the southern hemisphere.

My ears are full of the sound of the occasional passing car; the chatter of people walking along the street and the constant roar of the ocean, breaking it’s waves one after another after another against the beach and tidal pool.

The smell of the sea wafts across occasionally, mixed with the sickly smell of nearby pine trees and all of this as the wind blows gently across my arms and legs and my fingers type on the eerily illuminated keys of my laptop.

roar. twinkle. glow. breeze.

All of this is about as close to nature as you can get whilst still being within reach of a modern culture.  I’m extraordinarily privileged to be here.  Media Village will be moving on soon - most likely the next course like the one I am doing will be in new buildings a good distance away from all of this and in a different area of the bay.  I could be one of the last students here to be able to study in such an amazing location.  The new location is also going to be great - simply in a different way.

I’ve just spotted the Southern Cross.
