Yesterday I did quite a lot of catching up with myself, writing up notes from the last couple of weeks and updating my journal. I didn’t do a whole lot else. I neither went to church nor Robert’s braai. Missing the first of these wasn’t disappointing given that all churches round here seem to start at 9am and my desire to be in my bed until at least 11. Not going to the braai was a little disappointing - Robert is another DTS student (from the local area) and it would have been really nice to see his house. My somewhat poor excuse was that I needed to catch up.
Anyway - the evening was great. Giles, a friend from my church was in Cape Town for a wedding and after meeting briefly last week, kindly said he’d take me out for a meal. He came over to the base before hand and we wandered round doing ‘the tour’. About halfway round we bumped in to David, the other brit here, and it turned out that they knew each other. Small, small world.
To cut a long story short the three of us went and had a very nice meal down the road in an almost empty restaurant called Acanthus. The conversation flowed and it was really very pleasant. We recalled some of the teaching, experiences, the DTS timetable, church and other dinner table conversation. Giles is of my parents generation, I worked with him on the St Marks weekend away last year and got to know him that way. He is one of the few people that I know from the ‘other side’ (read ‘from the morning service’).
We all strolled back to the base and said our farewells. On Wednesday I have more visitors - Ali and Tamsin are heading to the Cape for a few days.
