Easter dawn

I got up for 6am again yesterday morning to go to the dawn service on the base we are staying at.  It was pretty dark when we pitched up but it was totally worth it.  The service was nice and informal - on plastic chairs in the middle of the field facing in the direction of the most amazing sunrise (will try and post photos from people later - watch me forget).  The service finished with an English couple on the base distributing hot cross buns for us all.
We then headed into Jinja to Full Gospel Church for a service that started at 9am.  In Africa the start time is when you leave home - so the time the service actually gets going is whenever enough people have shown up.  We pitched up at about 9:30 and the service started at around 10:15.  It was a dual language service in English and the local lingo with a translator constantly translating what we being said either to or, more frequently, from English.  It wasn’t too long as services go - finishing at around 12:45.

Yesterday was Sumona’s birthday.  We had a little pre-lunch picnic and four of us went down to Jinja town in yet another amazing vehicle for some juice and cake.  Happy birthday Sumona!

Speaking of vehicles - the roads around here are pretty terrible.  A mix of unsurfaced roads and surfaced roads (with more pot-holes than are worth counting).  Most vehicles are old with suspension that is no more and at least one door that doesn’t really work that well. Fitting seven adults in a car is normal.  Last nights vehicle had an amazing windscreen with many many cracks and doors that you could only open from the outside.  Brilliant.  I thought South Africa had a loose grip on road safety - in comparison to Uganda it is outstanding.  Due to the condition of the roads you never travel that fast (maybe not more than 30kph - although most speedometers don’t work…) although the developed worlds tradition to keeping to one side of the road is optional.

It’s time to go and do some washing, in a bucket, with my hands :-)

Happy Easter to all!
