This evening I went to the cinema to watch Juno. A story which hadn’t exactly inspired me when I read reviews - but the very same reviews were positive, so off I trundled to eat popcorn in a dark room for 90 minutes.
Well, in one sentence: it’s a life comentary that is vaguely in the quirky realm of Little Miss Sunshine.
It’s lovely. It’s real. Juno (Ellen Page) plays a rebellious teen who is smart and witty - without being over the top. She has sex with her best friend, finds she is pregnant, can’t go through with abortion, finds a couple to adopt her child and eventually falls in love with her best friend. My absolute favorite moments are those where she is creatively showing her love - whether it’s the garden chair or the life long tic-tac supply. Oh and she has a pipe.
It’s the first time I’ve seen Allison Janney (The West Wing’s CJ) play a role in a film since 10 Things I Hate About You and the step-mum character she took on was brought to life superbly. In fact the acting was top notch all round - Juno’s character is particularly vivid. Deserves all the awards it receives. Go and see.
Reminded me of a line in an episode from Scrubs 5 earlier today. Someone who loves you thinks that the sun is shining out of your ass even in the moments when you are feeling damn right ugly. Or something like that. On a not entirely unrelated note this is an entertaining Scrubs/Love/Charlie Brown fest.
