Seek to understand the causes of injustice, social unrest and fear. Are you working to bring about a just and compassionate society? <Graffiti: No>

I have never been an enthuastic proponent of social justice.  I suspect this is because I’m fundamentally selfish and honest about it.  (I’d also like to play the growing up in a house of Tearcraft sales - although this is obviously a cop out!)   However I was both slightly amused and frustrated by the graffiti on a quaker advert on the tube.

Am I working to bring about a just and compassionate society?  If not, then why not?  Surely this is one thing that I can happily adopt regardless of the rest of my religious of spiritual beliefs?  Surely this is a common thread through the many acceptable religions and philosophies around the world?

Having thought about this for a bit I’ve found that I like the way that this splits the understanding and the action.  As if both can be done separately yet simultaneously.  Yes, intellectual understanding is important and useful - perhaps as a means for tackling such things politically.  But at the end of the day - are you working [rather than just thinking?]?
